Buchanan takes blame for Kolkata's exit

Press Trust of India
Saturday, May 24, 2008 (New Delhi)
John Buchanan, who coached Australia to two World Cup wins, has owned up responsibility for the Kolkata Knight Riders' failure to make the semifinals of the Indian Premier League.

Buchanan rued the fact that he could not motivate the Knight Riders' players to perform consistently.

"Motivation should come from within. If I am not able to talk and get it from my players, which I indeed could not do at the IPL, I should be under review," he said.

"As a coach, I work on providing them with an environment to help them achieve their desires, the desire to try and improve. If I can change it fine, or else it would be time to go," he said on the occasion of the release of his book, 'If better is possible,' last night.

The 55-year-old said he is in no mood to return to take charge of any national side as he is not in a position to make "much impact" anymore.

"I don't want to go back to coaching a national team. A coach is the buffer to support and protect the players. I don't have the energy level to match it and I would not have much impact on the team," he said.

Buchanan, however, disagreed with Australian spin wizard and his strong critic Shane Warne's views that a national team did not need a coach.

"Of course, it (a coach) is needed," he said. "It is a huge task even if some people boast and have you believe the otherwise. Preparations are individualised. Take Matthew Hayden. If he had his way like he would just turn up on the day of the match, ready to play. Ready tactically, mentally, technically. You would find him spot on. But then there are other players as well who are different," he added

Warne quits first-class cricket for IPL, kids and business

Fri, Mar 28 11:35 AM

London, Mar 28 (ANI): Former Australian cricketer Shane Warne has decided to retire from all first class cricket and will not return to play for Hampshire this season, to spend quality time with his kids, focus on his growing business activities and spare time to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

He played for Hampshire for eight years, and now captains the IPL's Jaipur franchise "Rajasthan Royals".

"Unfortunately I am retiring from all first-class cricket but will participate in the IPL with the Jaipur franchise as captain and coach. This was not an easy decision to make but due to some exciting business opportunities and wanting to spend more time with my children, I had to make this call," The Times quoted Warne as saying while announcing his retirement.

"My eight years involved with Hampshire have been a wonderful experience. Memories that will last with me forever and likewise the friendships that have been formed at the club. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rod Bransgrove, Paul Terry and Tim Tremlett for their ongoing support and the opportunity to captain the club, and I wish them all the best for the coming season," Warne said.

Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove showered praises on the Australian bowler, saying his contribution to the side was immense and would be missed but not forgotten. "I am sure that all our supporters will join us in, firstly, thanking Shane for his dedication and commitment and, secondly, wishing him and his family the best of wishes for the next phase of his life. Warnie will be sorely missed, never forgotten."

He added: "The most effective and entertaining bowler of all time, Shane Warne was also a brilliant leader and strategist. As our captain, his influence was instrumental in the development of Hampshire into one of the country's top sides and he enriched the game wherever he played."

Paul Terry, the Hampshire team manager, said he was disappointed but not surprised by Warne's decision. "He has been fantastic for the club with his incredible enthusiasm, drive and skill as captain," Terry said, and added: "He will be missed considerably on the field as there has never been anyone better but most importantly he will leave behind a host of friends that he has made through his kindness, generosity and loyalty. He will be missed, but certainly never forgotten, and I personally thank him for the experience and wish him fantastic success in all his future endeavours."

Warne finished his Test career at the end of last year's Ashes series in Australia with a then world record 708 wickets at an average of just over 25 apiece from 145 matches. His record was later surpassed by Sri Lanka's extraordinary off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan. (ANI)

Sreesanth dances to impress Priyanka

The shocking news about the telephonic conversation between a lovestruck cricketer (Sreesanth) and a Bollywood actress (Priyanka Chopra) finally turned out to be a publicity stunt carried out by the Anglo-Dutch Unilever group.

In the audio clip, Sreesanth expressed over the phone how he was crazy about Priyanka and how his knees shook and palms got sweaty whenever he thinks about the diva.

David Beckham Biography!

I really thought I knew everything there is about the midfielder, but reading a David Beckham biography I found out more about the man behind the superstar. That’s why I decided to write my own biography of David Beckham, to share to you the player behind the million dollar endorsements.

David Beckham Biography – Manchester United
David Beckham’s story starts out near London, where he was born to a family of Manchester United fans. Despite being so close to clubs like West Ham United, Arsenal or Chelsea, Beckham’s aim was always the Red Devils club. As luck would have it, on his fourteenth birthday, he was taken in the Manchester youth program, and he even starred next to the senior team…as a mascot.

Just 4 years later, he went on to play for Sir Alex Ferguson’s senior squad, but his performance still needed fine tuning, so he was loaned to Preston North End for a year, returning to Manchester with some match experience. He quickly gained his place in the squad, despite his young age and became one of Manchester’s most preeminent players during the following decade.

His most successful season with Manchester is undoubtedly 1999, when the club achieved the Treble (League, Cup and Champions League in the same season) and with David Beckham playing soccer like never before.

It’s around then that he “trademarked” his famous free kicks and crosses and seeing some footage of David Beckham in action during that period will shed all doubts as to whether or not his superstardom status has a solid basis in his playing style, or just his good looks.

David Beckham Biography – 1998 World Cup Incident
His career did have a few rough moments, the most notable one being in 1998 with the English national side, at that year’s World Cup. In the Second Round, where England would play Argentina, Beckham was taunted by Argentinean midfielder Diego Simeone and he responded with a swing towards the player, which earned him a red card for bad behavior on the pitch.

With England losing the match and being knocked out of the tournament, all blame fell on David Beckham, as the English newspapers put him against the wall and fired up some poisonous articles. Any other player would have stayed low, or even quit soccer, but David Beckham’s ambition brought him back to the top. His performance with Manchester the following year, earned him back the respect of his fans and the entire world.

David Beckham Biography – Real Madrid
By the time David Beckham moved to Real Madrid in 2003, he was already a well-known star on the international stage. In his four years with the Madrid club he managed to win the Spanish league once, but his performance was deemed poorer than what he was playing at Manchester.

Many attributed this loss of form due to the new system found at Real and the fact that at Madrid he wasn’t the “star” of the team anymore, since he was playing next to other internationally famous soccer players like Zinedine Zidane, Raul or Roberto Carlos.

David Beckham Biography – Los Angeles Galaxy
Moving to play in the United States for the Los Angeles Galaxy as of 2007 earned him one of the biggest contracts in the history of soccer and it was an offer David couldn’t have refused, despite the fact that the soccer level in the United States is not as high as the one practiced in Spain.

Tendulkar recommended Dhoni as ODI captain: Pawar

New Delhi: It was Sachin Tendulkar's great idea to make Mahendra Singh Dhoni captain of India'a one-day cricket team, BCCI president Sharad Pawar disclosed today.

Pawar recalled how the Indian team plunged into a crisis in England last year with the then captain Rahul Dravid dropping first hints of his reluctance to lead the team.

"By that time, Rahul had told me he could not concentrate on his game and requested me to find someone else. Some of the selectors wanted Sachin to lead and I conveyed it to him. But Sachin said, 'please don't do this.' I asked then who should lead the side and he said 'give it to someone like Dhoni'."

"He said 'give Dhoni the opportunity. He has excellent relation with the teammates'. I told him I would not interfere but would definitely convey it to the selectors," the BCCI chief told PTI here.

Pawar also hailed Tendulkar and fellow senior players Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble for paving way for the youngsters in the Twenty20 team.

"I was in England when we were playing them. Sachin met me and suggested 'I know you don't interfere with the team selection but you please tell the selectors not to include players of my generation in the Twenty20 squad. He said 'my generation is not fit for Twenty20, so give opportunity to the youngsters."

"Now who would come and say 'don't induct us', when that means losing a few lakh rupees? I think we are fortunate to have players like Rahul, Sourav and Anil. Their commitment is unquestionable," Pawar said.

Pawar praised Dhoni's leadership qualities after the swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batsman led India to Twenty20 World Cup and the tri-series triumph in Australia.

"Dhoni as the captain has done extremely good. He can motivate and has a good equation with other players. He is also cool (under pressure)."

He, however, seemed more impressed by Test captain Anil Kumble, especially after the veteran spinner handled the Sydney racism row with great maturity.

"I would say Anil Kumble has been remarkable as captain. He is a good motivator and his behaviour was impeccable both on and off the field. In true sense of the term, he was an ambassador of the country and we are proud of the way he handled the entire issue," Pawar said.

During the racism row featuring Andrew Symonds and Harbhajan Singh, Kumble's composure drew rich praise from all quarters.

Amid all the allegations and counter-allegations, Kumble's lone observation was that of the two teams fighting a no-holds-barred battle in the acrimonious Test, only one team played in the true spirit of the game.

Dhoni defends his insistence on young players in tri-series

New Delhi: India ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Wednesday defended his insistence on young players at the cost of veterans like Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly during the recent tri-series in Australia and said that he had got the team he wanted.

"I was pretty clear about the players I wanted in the side. That's what I said to the selectors as well. You can see the kind of team I got," he said.

Without naming the dropped players, Dhoni said, "It's very important because the process and the timing (of the selection) were criticised a lot. But sometimes it is very important to send the message across, because sometimes people neglect the answer," Dhoni told cricinfo.

The young captain said he told his ODI team-mates to perform in view of the questions being raised about their ability to handle demanding conditions and majority of them having not played in Australia.

"What now? Why are people not asking the same questions now? Because if the result was not in our favour, what would have happened? Would the people have been really behind this side or behind individuals?" an apparently hurt Dhoni said.

"You (the critics) questioned this side but now that it's performed you need to back it," he said of India's first one-day series triumph in Australia in 23 years.

"We all knew, and you all knew, what would have happened if this side didn't do well in Australia. Now that it has done well, why don't you appreciate the performance?"

Dhoni made it clear that the aggressive tactics against Australia in the tri-series were premeditated and not fake. "In the CB Series you hardly saw any conflict between India and Sri Lanka. If your are playing against an aggressive side, you need to play an aggressive game. Especially against Australia, you can't just look to play and win -- it's batting, bowling, fielding, aggression, everything," he said.

"Fortunately this side has got a few players who can speak and do well at the same time and won't get disturbed by it ... You need to identify those who can be pepped up and do well while they're speaking. In a way I'm fortunate to have those players in the side, rather than ask those who are not comfortable doing it ... I won't name names but there were individuals who were saying things, within the boundaries."

Dhoni gets studious, seeks admission in B Com

New Delhi: Indian One-Day and Twenty20 skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has already made his mark on the cricket field. Now the wicketkeeper/batsman wants to get back to academics and complete his graduation.

Dhoni is aspiring to go into a college and get Bachelor of Commerce degree.

A resident of Jharkhand’s capital Ranchi, Dhoni wants to take admission in St Xavier's College through the sports quota.

Even though the college has agreed to admit him and has asked him to fill up the admission form, but the college authorities have said that Dhoni can be admitted only after they consult Ranchi University.

The decision will also have to be ratified by the Jharkhand Academic Council.

Dhoni has already met Ranchi University Sports Director Jai Kumar Sinha.

Dhoni led the Indian team that won the inaugural Twenty20 World Championship in South Africa last year and in February this year he guided the Indian One-Day team to its first-ever tri-series triumph in Australia defeating the world champions in the two finals.

He was auctioned for Rs 6 crore in Indian Premier League and will play for the Chennai Super Kings in the Twenty20 tournament starting April 18.

SRK's Knight Riders ready for IPL stage

New Delhi: The Indian Premier League is gaining momentum and it's almost like it's Shah Rukh Khan and not Sourav Ganguly who's the public face of the Kolkata team which is now called the Kolkata Knight Riders.

"I want every youth in Indian to be a Knight Rider," Shah Rukh Khan said on Tuesday in Kolkata.

The Bollywood superstar decided to pull out all stops in Kolkata to promote his team.

And with King Khan at the helm, the drama, the action and the comedy was inevitable.

Fresh from his stint as a coach in Chak De India. Shah Rukh kept his one-liners handy.

You don't win the silver, you lose the gold," he said.

Unveiling his teams logo and mascot, the actor pledged his faith in the city and his skipper.

"Kolkata is a city of cricket, plus the fact that it comes with the benefit of Sourav Ganguly who I really admire for his grit," he said.

And apart from grabbing attention - if you're wondering what exactly SRK's role in the whole campaign is.

"I have done what I am an expert at. I created a tongue-in-cheek logo," he said about

With the kind of popularity that SRK enjoys in Kolkata, the Knight Riders will pull in crowds. And as for the game itself, they do have 'Dada of Indian cricket'.

Publicity in place, the Knight Riders sure seem ready to kickstart their battle. Of course, with a prayer:

"I'm hoping they become the best team, become world famous," Juhi Chawla said.

Cricket-Tendulkar regains top spot in one-day rankings

NEW DELHI, March 5 (Reuters) - Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar has regained top spot in the one-day rankings after leading his country to a tri-series triumph over Australia.

Tendulkar, who last topped the charts in August 2004, replaced Australian skipper Ricky Ponting, the International Cricket Council said on Wednesday.

Tendulkar climbed 10 places after match-winning knocks of 117 not out and 91 in the finals in Sydney and Brisbane respectively to aggregate 399 runs in the series, which ended on Tuesday.
He also holds the records for most one-day runs (16,361) and centuries (42).

Ponting, who made only 191 runs in 10 innings, is second, 17 points ahead of South African Graeme Smith.

Cricket-Symonds to face no action for knocking over streaker

SYDNEY, March 5 (Reuters) - Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds will face no action after he knocked over a streaker in his side's nine-run one-day international loss to India in Brisbane on Tuesday. Robert Murray David Ogilvie stormed the field and ran towards Symonds, who shoulder-charged him to the ground before the naked Ogilvie was led off by police and security guards.

"He was dealing with self-preservation which we support 100 percent," Cricket Australia's Michael Brown told reporters in Canberra.

"Andrew was in the zone and was severely threatened."

Ogilvie, 26, pleaded guilty in Brisbane Magistrates Court to interfering with persons engaged in sport and wilful exposure on Wednesday.

He was fined A$1,500 ($1,402) but no conviction was recorded. Police told Australian Associated Press they had not received a complaint about Symonds' actions.

Local media had suggested Symonds could have been charged under the International Cricket Council's Code of Conduct or charged with assault by police, had Ogilvie made a complaint. (Reporting by Greg Stutchbury in Hamilton, New Zealand, Editing by Martin Petty)

Harbhajan taunt claims dismissed

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has moved swiftly to dismiss suggestions India's Harbhajan Singh racially abused Australian fans.

It was claimed he made monkey gestures and spat at sections of the crowd as India beat Australia in Sydney.

Match referee Jeff Crowe spoke to security officials, viewed photographs and read newspaper reports before deciding there was no case to answer.

He said: "There is no need to take any action against Harbhajan Singh."

Before the ICC gave its verdict, India were insistent Harbhajan was innocent.

"He did nothing," said team manager Bimal Soni.

"These stories, I do not believe them and strongly condemn them. I think it is wrong.

"Nothing has been done like that, they are making a mountain out of a molehill."

Before the ICC announcement, former Australia skipper Allan Border also came out in defence of Harbhajan, saying: "I am not too sure how serious it is.

"I was on that side of the ground yesterday and Harbhajan was copping a fair bit of stick from the crowd.

"I didn't notice any gestures at all and I thought he handled himself quite well to be quite honest."

The allegations are the latest to affect India's controversial tour of Australia.

Harbhajan was initially banned for three Tests for allegedly calling Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds a monkey during the second Test in January.

But at an appeal hearing it was decided there had not been enough evidence to convict him of racial abuse.

Ishant Sharma lost 15% of a match fee for this gesture

The ICC instead charged him with using abusive language. Harbhajan was fined and did not serve any ban.

Australia batsman Matthew Hayden was reprimanded on 27 February for describing Harbhajan as an "obnoxious weed".

In between times, India cricket chiefs have proposed a complete ban on 'sledging' - the verbal abuse of players.

During India's time in Australia there have been suggestions their players have been goaded into over-stepping the mark.

When young India bowler Ishant Sharma was fined on 25 February for an aggressive gesture directed at Symonds, Crowe said: "Sharma may have been provoked."

The ICC says its existing "code of conduct" - combined with the actions of on-field umpires - can help implement a "zero-tolerance" approach to sledging.

IPL auction changes Ishant's life for ever

Sydney: The morning after the Indian Premier League auction, when their phones did not stop ringing, most Indian cricketers stayed put in their hotel rooms and reflected on the seismic event which has changed their lives forever.

For long, they hankered with their board about suitable gradations and now an open market has reflected their true worth.

Or has it? For young Ishant Sharma fetched a price in the auction ($950,000) which outstripped the likes of Anil Kumble and Muthiah Muralitharan; Chaminda Vaas and Brett Lee; Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath.

Sharma, all of 6'4" and still growing, is not yet 20 and in five Tests and seven One-day internationals, has only 12 and eight wickets to boast. Yet his $950,000 is nearly twice the amount which his captain Anil Kumble has commanded.

Kumble has spent as many summers in the field as Sharma has seen in his young life. It is the brand value and saleability among youth, rather than quality and longevity, which has dictated the market.

Sharma, the success story of the present tour, is reaping beyond his wildest dreams. A destiny's child, he cooled his heels in the Melbourne Test despite picking a five-wicket haul in the previous game for India. Injury to Zaheer Khan marked his return in Sydney.

Kumble's words "Ek Aur Over Karega" in Perth when he clearly already had over bowled an over or two, was the cataclysmic moment of his life.

He kept getting the big wickets, Ricky Ponting all the time, and reviews only got better.

Javagal Srinath has no doubt Sharma was better than him at his age. He predicted the young Delhi fast bowler could be the best in the world in due course. Australian Damien Fleming had a similar refrain on the young beanpole of a bowler. Steve Waugh, Terry Alderman, Kapil Dev - everyone kept gushing and it seems all such praise was adding those extra thousands of dollars to his worth.

Beckham (right) played under Capello at Real Madrid

Beckham left out of England squad

David Beckham has been left out of Fabio Capello's first England squad to play Switzerland on 6 February।

It means Beckham will be left still searching for his 100th cap, although Capello has not fully closed the door on the 32-year-old former captain।
Capello, who also dropped Beckham at Real Madrid, is thought to have had doubts over his match fitness।
The Italian will name his provisional party at 1530 GMT on Thursday, with the final squad announced on Saturday।
Beckham has not played a competitive game since England's Euro qualifying defeat by Croatia on 21 November.
However, Beckham has been training at Arsenal and told BBC World in Brazil on Tuesday that he "is as fit as I can be। I'm fit and sharp and I'm ready to be selected".
The midfielder, who had been in the resort city of Natal to announce plans to expand his soccer academy, also posed for the cameras showing off his footwork skills on a beach.
But Capello does not appear to share Beckham's view and can point to the fact that Beckham's LA Galaxy side have not played competitively since their MLS season ended last October।

Beckham will now have to wait to join Peter Shilton, Bobby Moore, Sir Bobby Charlton and Billy Wright in the exclusive club of players with 100 caps।
Or indeed face up to the distinct possibility he may not play for England again।
Capello also has to make a decision on the issue of who will be captain, something which the 61-year-old has given paramount importance to.
"There are many things I have to evaluate and I must come up with a choice that is right," said the Italian।
"A captain must be a leader, someone who carries the team, somebody that in every moment is important for the team।"
Chelsea centre-back John Terry, likely to miss the friendly because of injury, was the leader of choice under McClaren, but Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has given his endorsement to Rio Ferdinand, while Liverpool's Steven Gerrard will also be in the running।
There is also the issue about who will be Capello's number one goalkeeper, with Tottenham's Paul Robinson, Aston Villa's Scott Carson, West Ham's Robert Green, Portsmouth's David James and the uncapped Joe Hart of Manchester City all in the frame।
Meanwhile, other players understood to be in the running for a place in the final squad include Blackburn midfielder David Bentley, Reading striker Dave Kitson and Aston Villa winger Ashley Young।
FA boss expresses England fears
Football Association boss Brian Barwick admits he is worried the pool of talent available to England boss Fabio Capello is not as well-stocked as it should be.
In an interview with BBC sports editor Mihir Bose, Barwick said: "We do have good players, but we don't have 50, 60, 70 players to pick from any more।"
Barwick also felt the Premier League should be helping redress the balance।
"The Premier League is a great league but it has a responsibility to deliver some good players to the FA," he said।
Barwick said it was important for the health of the game in this country to have a flourishing national side.

"A great England team is great for English football right across the piece," he said.
The Premier League responded to Barwick's comments by claiming they already invested a lot of time and resources in developing England stars of the future।

"The clubs are intellectually and financially committed to producing home-grown players," said Premier League spokesman Dan Johnson.
"Over £40m a year is invested by Premier League clubs in youth development, but also it's about standards of coaching, it's about grass-roots as well।

"We're working with the FA to ensure the coaching certificates and the coaches that they are responsible for, as well as the raw materials that come into the academies, are up to scratch."
Barwick raised his concerns about the national side as he celebrated his third anniversary as the FA's chief executive।
It is also less than a week until Capello leads England out for the first time following his appointment as Steve McClaren's successor.
Switzerland will provide the opposition at Wembley on Wednesday as the 61-year-old Italian attempts to resurrect England's fortunes following their failure to qualify for this year's European Championships।

Barwick admits it is frustrating to see the England team struggle at a time when the Premier League is prospering.
"It's something of a dilemma for us," he said। "Are there enough English players? There aren't the same number of English players, that's for certain। We have to sort it out।

"Some of the top teams have less English players in them than foreign players. That's just the way the game has gone.
"That's not to say the players we have can't deliver। It's about having the right situation in place for them to deliver।"

BCCI asks players to behave after रो

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The Indian cricket board (BCCI) has told its players in Australia to behave themselves after the row involving spinner Harbhajan Singh overshadowed an exciting test series, its secretary Niranjan Shah said on Thursday।

"We have already asked the players, given them instructions not to get into such type of altercations," Shah told Reuters, adding that he expected India to put the controversy behind them for the remainder of the tour।

On Tuesday, International Cricket Council (ICC) appeals commissioner John Hansen downgraded the charges against Harbhajan from racial abuse against Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds to using abusive language due to a lack of evidence।

The off-spinner consequently escaped a three-match suspension and was fined half his match fee for the second test in Sydney, where the incident took place।
The Indian board threatened to abandon the tour if the racial abuse charges stuck and the ICC was left red-faced when Hansen revealed Harbhajan got away lightly because officials informed him of only one of the player's four prior offences।

Shah rejected heavy criticism, especially by the Australian media, that the Indian board flexed its financial muscle and held the game to ransom।

"It was a fair judgement," Shah said. "We don't have to go by what the Australian media says. We've gone by the procedure put in place by the ICC and we accept the judgement."

Bhajji breathes a sigh of relief

Melbourne, Jan। 30: "I am very happy, the right decision was made. I am glad it’s over," said off-spinner Harbhajan Singh as the Indians landed at the Tullamarine Airport here in Wednesday afternoon and added he was relieved that he has been cleared of the racial abuse charge brought against him during the Sydney Test.

Later, asked at nets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground here on Wednesday evening if there had been a party, Harbhajan said: "There’s nothing to celebrate। We didn’t win the series, did we?"

At Tullamarine, Harbhajan was given tighter security as the Indian ODI team landed in the afternoon and he was escorted to the team bus ahead of the drive into Melbourne and to the Langham Hotel, the Indians’ bases from the earlier, happier days of the tour Down Under.

Meanwhile, reborn opener Virender Sehwag finds himself on top of the list of choices for the T20 game at the MCG here and for the Commonwealth Bank tri-series that will follow Friday’s game at the MCG।

Coach-in-waiting Gary Kirsten paid particular attention to the Najafgarh Nawab at nets at the WACA ground in Perth ahead of third Test that India won in historic fashion and thereafter added a battling 151 in the drawn fourth and final Test at Adelaide that ended on Monday.

At Perth, Kirsten paid particular attention to Sehwag, finetuning aspects of the dashing right-hander’s batting that could help him overcome his obvious deficiencies in footwork, especially against the faster bowlers।

"Come at me with your head," Kirsten called repeatedly during a series of throw-downs he held especially for Sehwag and fellow-opener Wasim Jaffer.
While the latter continued to sink under the weight of his uncertainties, Sehwag thrived। The outcome was a series aggregate of 286 at 71.50 and he is now poised to play a role in India’s ODI schedule in the immediate future with Yuvraj Singh ruled out till at least the second of India’s matches at Brisbane next week.

Roebuck, who called for Ponting's head, slams India for crude, 'naked aggression'

Hard-hitting cricket columnist Peter Roebuck, who had called for Ricky Ponting's head for his poor leadership during the dramatic final moments of the Sydney Test that Australia won, has now hit out at the Indian cricket establishment for setting a "dreadful precedent" in their handling of the Harbhajan Singh controversy.

"India's performance in chartering a plane to take the players back home in the event of an independent judge finding against them in the Harbhajan Singh case counted amongst the most nakedly aggressive actions taken in the history of a notoriously fractious game। If this is the way the Indian board intends to conduct its affairs hereafter, then God help cricket," Roebuck wrote in The Sydney Morning Herald.

"It is high time the elders of the game in that proud country stopped playing to the gallery and considered the game's wider interests। India is not some tin pot dictatorship but an international powerhouse, and ought to think and act accordingly. Brinkmanship or not, threatening to take their bat and ball home in the event of a resented verdict being allowed to stand was an abomination. It sets a dreadful precedent. What price justice now?" asked Roebuck before calling Harbhajan "a hothead with an unpleasant tongue".

The former Somerset captain, widely respected in world cricket circles for his reading of the game, then digs to two earlier instances where the Australians could have felt aggrieved in India.
Australia "were entitled to take a stand and demand a hearing - especially after their disgraceful treatment by the crowd and a local umpire in Mumbai not long ago (not to mention in Kolkata in 2004) last October," he wrote।

Roebuck's reference to the Kolkata TVS Cup tri-series final in 2003-04 where Australia won by 37 runs is vague because most of the decisions taken by the two umpires A V Jayaprakash (India) and David Shepherd (England) did not give rise to any debate. And as far as the crowd there goes, Roebuck, who was present to cover that match, had written then: "A final at Eden is bigger - in terms of atmosphere - than a final at Lord's or the MCG. Why? The people."

But his reference to the local umpire in Mumbai is no surprise। Be it the dubious decision on Brad Hogg (caught at short-leg) or the Murali Kartik caught-behind appeal that was turned down, Australia can rightfully claim to have got a raw deal from Indian umpire Amish Saheba.

Eventually, the visitors lost the game by two wickets, with the ninth-wicket partnership of 53 runs between Kartik and Zaheer Khan seeing India through।

To top it all, Mumbai made headlines in a rather ugly way, with a section of the crowd snapped on camera making monkey gestures at Andrew Symonds। Symonds in Sydney had claimed that Harbhajan had racially abused him by calling him a "monkey" - the charge was downgraded yesterday after the ICC appeals panel said it could not be proved.

In his latest column, Roebuck also came down hard on attempts by Cricket Australia and BCCI to "broker a compromise" on the Harbhajan issue। "All around, it has been a bad business. Over the years, India have often been represented by gentlemen with high principles and a strong sense of sportsmanship. Australia have not been so fortunate. But it seems that power has corrupted. It was intolerable that India's one-day players were sent to Adelaide when they ought to have been practising hard in Melbourne," he wrote. "It was not an implied threat to the justice system. It was a direct challenge to it. India took part in the creation of the legal framework they disregarded. If the Indians had packed their bags, Australia should have refused to appear in India next season," he added.

Roebuck's earlier column in the same newspaper after the Sydney Test had sparked worldwide furore when he called for an "arrogant" Ponting to resign for turning "a bunch of professional cricketers into a pack of wild dogs". Roebuck was objecting to Australia's over-aggressive attitude in a match scarred by bad umpiring.
